Details: Amazon.ca The influence that doombringers Ministry have had on much of the industrial new-wave should not be underestimated, so it's fitting that Greatest Fits--a compilation of memorable back-catalogue moments--is released in 2001. Frontman Al Jourgensen's white-trash cowboy aesthetic was the stylistic glue in Ministry's fusion of industrial noise and heavy metal, paving the way for acts like Marilyn Manson to bring the sound of noise-rock to Middle America. Understandably, Greatest Fits airbrushes out Ministry's potentially embarrassing early synth-pop direction, instead concentrating on the nihilistic roar that made them famous. The screaming, siren-laden "NWO" and the militaristic jackboot crash of unlikely MTV hit "Jesus Built My Hotrod"--featuring a guest vocal from deranged Butthole Surfers' lead singer Gibby Haynes--are probably this compilation's most crucial moments, although an uncharacteristically anthemic, radio-friendly take on Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay" is more than just a curio. That the later tracks--"What About Us", taken from the score to Spielberg's A.I and a few picks from 1999's unremarkable Dark Side of the Spoon--sound little different to the band's pioneering late 1980s/early 90s output suggests the band has stagnated, but Greatest Fits remains about as definitive a document of their glory days as you'll find. --Louis Pattison Product Description Ministry
